Dryer repair in Welland, with the vent line checked while we are there

A large share of dryer calls come down to airflow rather than the machine. Lint packed into the duct makes every load take twice as long, and long before that becomes a laundry problem it is a fire risk. So the tech looks at the vent run on every visit, not as an upsell.

  • Electric dryers, vented and ventless, stacked laundry pairs included
  • The duct run gets inspected as part of the job, and you hear what we find
  • Parts and labour come as one number, agreed before anything comes apart
  • Three months on our labour, and someone answers 7am to 11pm every day

Tell us how your dryer is behaving and we will arrive with the right parts

Four groups of faults cover almost every dryer call in Welland, and airflow is behind more of them than most people expect. Two of these you can check tonight before booking anyone.

Two or three cycles to dry one load

The most common call we take, and the one people put up with the longest. A dryer works by moving hot air through the clothes and out of the house. Slow that path anywhere and drying time doubles.

  • Go outside and look at the vent hood while a load runs. Weak air or none at all means the duct is packed, not the dryer.
  • A crushed flexible duct behind the machine is common where a dryer sits tight against the wall in a small laundry room.
  • Birds nest in outside vent hoods every spring around here, and the flap gets held open or blocked entirely.
  • Lint gets past a torn filter screen and collects in the blower housing, where no amount of cleaning the filter reaches it.

It tumbles but the clothes come out cold

The drum turns, the timer counts down, and nothing gets warm. On an electric dryer this is usually one of a small handful of parts, and it is one of the more satisfying repairs because the fix is immediate.

  • A burnt out heating element is the usual answer, and it rarely fails on its own without a restricted vent behind it.
  • A blown thermal fuse cuts the heat and leaves everything else working. It is a safety part, so we look for what tripped it rather than just swapping it.
  • Half the power gone at the breaker gives you exactly this: the drum spins on one leg while the element gets nothing.
  • Worth resetting the breaker once before you book. If the heat comes back and then goes again, that tells us something too.

Noise, or a drum that will not turn

Dryers are mechanically simple, so noises point somewhere specific. If the motor hums but the drum sits still, stop using it, because that is the one that turns into a bigger repair.

  • A snapped drive belt leaves the motor running while the drum spins freely by hand. Common and quick to put right.
  • Rhythmic squeaking that speeds up with the drum is usually the support rollers or the idler pulley wearing flat.
  • A hard scraping sound often turns out to be a coin or an underwire that has worked its way past the drum seal.
  • A motor that hums without turning is seized or jammed, and running it repeatedly is what turns a belt job into a motor job.

Burning smell, or it shuts off partway

Treat a burning smell as urgent. Stop the machine, pull the plug and ring us before running another load, because this is the fault that occasionally becomes a house fire.

  • Lint that has built up against a hot element is the classic cause, and the smell arrives well before anything else does.
  • Shutting down partway and restarting later is a thermal cut-out doing its job, which means heat is not escaping.
  • A cabinet that is hot to the touch on the outside points the same way, at restricted airflow rather than at the controls.
  • A hot rubbery smell rather than a burnt one is usually the belt slipping on a seized roller, and it is still worth stopping for.

Smelling something burning? Unplug it, leave it, and ring us before you run another load. For anything else, describe what it does and we will tell you what it usually means before anyone drives out.

Call and ask. These five come up on nearly every dryer job.

A couple of them you can settle yourself tonight, and we would rather you did than paid us for the trip.

How do I know whether it is the dryer or the vent?

Start a load, walk outside, and put your hand near the vent hood on the wall. A working dryer pushes out a steady stream of warm, damp air that you cannot miss. If there is barely a breath, the duct is the problem and no part inside the machine will fix it. While you are there, check the flap actually opens, since a hood painted shut or blocked with lint does the same thing.

How often should the vent duct be cleaned?

Once a year suits most households. Sooner if the run is long or has several bends, if you dry bedding and towels constantly, or if there is a pet in the house shedding into everything. The honest signal is drying time. If a normal load has crept from forty minutes to over an hour, the duct has been filling up for a while regardless of what the calendar says.

The dryer runs for two minutes and shuts off. Why?

That is almost always a thermal cut-out doing exactly what it was designed to do. Heat is building up faster than it can escape, so the machine protects itself and stops. The cut-out is not the fault, it is the symptom, and replacing it without finding the restriction just means it trips again next week. This one is worth a visit rather than a workaround, because the alternative is a dryer running hot with nowhere to put the heat.

Is a dryer worth repairing, or should I just replace it?

Dryers are the best case of the six appliances we work on. There is not much inside one, the parts are inexpensive, and a belt, a roller, an element or a fuse on a fifteen year old machine is still money well spent. The machines are also simple enough that they tend to keep going for years after the repair. We very rarely tell anyone to scrap a dryer, and when we do it is because the drum or the cabinet has gone rather than a part.

Do you take the dryer down off the washer?

Yes, and it is worth saying so when you book. A stacked pair in a hallway closet is a two person job on some models, and the difference between sending one tech and two is the difference between fixing it today and rebooking you for later in the week. Same goes for a dryer wedged in with no clearance behind it, which is common in the older homes around Crowland.

Dryer calls we took in Welland, in their own words

Neighbours who had been running every load twice and finally picked up the phone. Swipe or use the arrows to read more.

Two full cycles for one load of towels, and I had been doing that since about February. He pulled the duct off the back and what came out of it was frightening. Dries in forty minutes now like it used to.

Drum turning, no heat at all. Booked before nine, running again by lunch.
Pete D.Cooks Mills · 2 weeks ago
There was a burning smell and I had been ignoring it for a couple of weeks. The person on the phone told me to unplug it and not run another load before they got here. That call probably mattered more than the repair did.

Horrible squealing every time the drum went round. I had convinced myself we were buying a new one. It was a roller and a belt, and the bill was nothing like what I had braced for.

Kept shutting off part way through and starting again later. He found a nest in the outside vent hood, which I would never have thought to look at. Cleared it and checked the whole run while he was here.

Ours sits on top of the washer in a closet and needed lifting down. Two of them came, it went back exactly where it was, and nothing on the wall got scraped.

Book a dryer repair and stop running every load twice

Leave your number and we ring back to confirm a window. If you would rather just talk to someone now, the phone is answered every day from 7am to 11pm.

  • Say roughly how long a normal load now takes, it narrows things down fast
  • Mention a stacked pair or a tight closet so we send enough hands the first time
  • If you can smell burning, unplug it and call rather than filling in a form
