Stove repair in Welland, gas and electric, done properly

A cooktop is the one appliance in the house where a bodged repair has consequences beyond the appliance. Our gas work is carried out under a TSSA licence, which is worth asking any company about before you let them near a gas line.

If you can smell gas right now

Do not switch anything on or off, get everyone out of the house, and call Enbridge from outside on their emergency line. Ring us afterwards, once the gas side is safe.

  • Gas and electric ranges, built in cooktops, induction and glass tops
  • Gas work carried out under a TSSA licence, and we will show it if you ask
  • One number for parts and labour, agreed before a single screw comes out
  • Three months on our labour, and the phone is answered 7am to 11pm daily
Gas cooktop with a burner cap and grate lifted off during a repair in Welland

Tell us what the cooktop is doing and we will bring the parts for it

Four groups of faults cover nearly every stove call in Welland. One of them you can often clear yourself with a paperclip and ten minutes, and we will tell you how rather than charge you for it.

Gas range repaired by Canal City Appliance Repair in Welland

The burner clicks and clicks but never lights

The most common gas call we take, and often the cheapest to sort. The igniter is sparking, so the electrics are alive. Something is stopping the spark and the gas meeting properly.

  • Lift the cap off the burner and check it is bone dry and seated flat. Boil-over into that gap causes a lot of these calls.
  • The small ports around the burner head block with grease. A straightened paperclip clears them, never a toothpick that can snap off inside.
  • If every burner clicks at once whenever you turn one on, that is a failed spark module rather than the burners.
  • A cracked igniter electrode sparks somewhere it should not. That one is ours to change, not a job for a kitchen table repair.

A yellow, lazy or uneven flame

A healthy gas flame is crisp blue and sits steady. Yellow, floppy or lifting off the burner means the air and gas mix is wrong, and that is a combustion issue rather than a cosmetic one.

  • Soot marks on the bottom of your pans are the giveaway, and worth calling about rather than scrubbing off each week.
  • A misaligned burner head or a blocked air shutter starves the flame of air, which is what turns it yellow.
  • A stove converted between natural gas and propane needs the right orifices fitted. Wrong ones give exactly this flame.
  • All gas adjustments here are made under a TSSA licence. This is not a category to hand to a general handyman.

An electric element that stays cold

On coil, glass and induction tops the symptoms look similar from above but the causes sit in different places. Which rings still work tells the tech most of what they need.

  • One ring dead while the rest work is usually the element itself or its connector block, which runs hot and corrodes over time.
  • An element stuck on full heat with no control in between is a failed switch, and that one is worth turning off at the breaker until we arrive.
  • On induction, a zone that refuses pans that used to work is often the cookware rather than the hob. Check a magnet sticks to the base first.
  • Half the cooktop dead at once points at one leg of the supply, so it is worth checking the breaker before anyone drives out.

Knobs that turn but nothing happens

Controls take a beating on a cooktop. Heat, steam and years of cleaning around them wear out the switches and the touch panels long before the burners give up.

  • A knob that spins loosely without resistance has usually stripped its shaft, and that is one of the cheapest parts in the kitchen.
  • A touch panel that ignores you in one spot but works elsewhere is a failing membrane rather than a dead cooktop.
  • Check the control lock before you book. Most modern hobs have one, and a long press on the padlock icon has saved a few people a call out.
  • Water that has run down behind a knob during cleaning can jam the switch. It sometimes frees up once everything dries out properly.

If you can smell gas, do not troubleshoot anything. Leave the house without touching any switches and call Enbridge from outside. Ring us once the gas side is safe, and we will handle the appliance under our TSSA licence.

Ring and ask. These five come up on nearly every stove call.

The first one is worth reading even if your stove is working fine today.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

Leave the house and call Enbridge from outside on their emergency line. Do not switch anything on or off on your way out, including lights, and do not use the phone indoors, because a switch contact makes a small spark. Open a door if it is on your way but do not go hunting for the source. Enbridge attends gas emergencies around the clock at no charge. Once they have made the gas side safe, call us and we will handle the appliance.

Why does the igniter keep clicking after the burner lights?

Usually moisture or food debris sitting where the igniter meets the burner, so the module never gets confirmation that a flame is present and keeps trying. Take the cap and grate off, let everything dry properly, and clean around the electrode with a dry brush rather than a wet cloth. If it still clicks with everything bone dry, the electrode or the spark module is on its way out, and continuous sparking is not something to live with long term.

My flame is yellow instead of blue. Does that matter?

It does. Blue means the gas is burning cleanly, and yellow means it is not getting enough air, which produces soot and carbon monoxide instead of a clean burn. It is not an emergency the way a gas smell is, but it should not be left for months either. While you are thinking about it, check you have a working carbon monoxide alarm. In Ontario one is required on every storey where people sleep in a home with a fuel burning appliance, and a lot of houses have one that stopped working years ago.

Can you convert my stove between natural gas and propane?

If the manufacturer makes a conversion kit for your model, yes, and it is done under our TSSA licence. What we will not do is improvise one, because the orifices are sized for a specific gas pressure and a wrong size gives you the lazy yellow flame from the question above at best. If your stove came from a house on a different supply and has never been converted, that is worth sorting properly rather than living with it.

The glass top has a crack in it. Can it be repaired?

The glass itself cannot be repaired, only replaced, and stop using the cooktop in the meantime because a crack lets spills reach live components underneath. Whether replacing it makes sense depends on the model. On some ranges the glass is a reasonable part, on others it costs more than half a new appliance, and on discontinued models it is simply not available any more. We will find out what yours costs and tell you plainly if the answer is a new stove.

Front burner clicked forever and would not catch. The woman on the phone asked me to lift the cap off and check underneath before she booked anything. It was wet from a pot boiling over. Dried it, lit first time, no visit needed and no charge.

Flames had gone yellow and there was black on the bottom of my pans. I had been scrubbing them for a year without asking why. He sorted the burner and explained what yellow actually means. Also asked whether we had a working CO alarm, which we did not.

Two rings dead on the glass top. Fixed in one visit and the price was the price I was told.

We brought a gas range with us when we moved and it had never run right in this house. Turned out it was set up for the wrong gas entirely. They did the conversion properly with the manufacturer kit and showed me the licence when I asked, which I appreciated.

Induction hob had stopped recognising one of my pans. He asked me to hold a magnet to the base while we were still on the phone. It did not stick. New pan, problem solved, and he would not let me book a call out for it.

A knob had stripped and the burner was stuck on high, which frankly scared me. Someone was here that evening and it was a small part in the end. I would not have wanted to leave that until the morning.
