Tell us what your fridge is doing and we will bring the parts for it

Four groups of faults cover almost every fridge call we take in Welland. Here is what each one usually turns out to be, so you know what the tech is looking at before anyone knocks on your door.

Refrigerator repair in a Welland kitchen

Running, but never getting cold

The compressor is doing its job, so something else is stopping the cold from being made or from staying in. These go to the front of the queue, because the clock on your groceries started the moment it quit.

  • Coils packed with dust and pet hair are behind a surprising share of warm fridges. Cleaned properly, not just blown at.
  • A failed start relay or capacitor stops the compressor kicking in. Small part, quick swap, the usual happy ending here.
  • A seized condenser fan leaves the heat nowhere to go, so it runs and runs while the cabinet stays warm.
  • A leak in the sealed system is the honest one. On most household units the tech will tell you it is not worth the work.

Frost, ice and blocked airflow

Heavy frost is rarely about a door left open. The automatic defrost cycle has stopped melting the ice, and that ice then chokes the air path between the freezer and the fridge.

  • Behind the freezer back panel there is a block of ice where there should be fins. The defrost heater or its thermostat has given up.
  • Freezer cold and fridge warm almost always means the damper between the two is stuck shut or the evaporator fan has stopped.
  • Door seals that have gone hard let humid room air in, and that moisture turns straight into frost on the coils.
  • Worth checking nothing is holding the door ajar first. A tall bottle in the shelf rack does this more often than people expect.

Water inside it or on your floor

Water comes from one of two places, the defrost drain or the supply line, and each leaves its own trail. Telling them apart takes minutes, which is why this rarely becomes a long visit.

  • An ice plug in the defrost drain sends meltwater into the crisper drawers. Cleared and flushed so it does not return next month.
  • A split water inlet valve puts water behind the fridge rather than inside it. That is the valve feeding the ice maker and dispenser.
  • Condensation is meant to sit in the drain pan and evaporate. A cracked pan puts it on your kitchen floor instead.
  • Ice maker lines that freeze up will overflow every cycle until the line and the module are sorted together.

Noises it never used to make

Every fridge hums. What matters is what changed and where it comes from, so it helps if you can say whether the sound is at the back, inside the freezer, or underneath.

  • Rattling from behind is usually the condenser fan blade catching, or compressor mounts that have gone hard with age.
  • Whirring that stops the second you open the freezer door is the evaporator fan, with bearings on their way out.
  • Clicking every few minutes then silence is the start relay failing to fire. Worth calling quickly, it shortens the compressor's life.
  • Gurgling and trickling is normally nothing at all. Describe it on the phone and we will say straight out whether it needs a visit.

Not sure which group yours falls into? Describe the noise and we will tell you what it usually means before anyone drives out. No charge for the visit or the diagnostic once you approve the repair.

Ask before you book. These five come up on nearly every fridge call.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. Nobody on the other end is going to push you into a visit you do not need.

My fridge just quit. What should I do while I wait for you?

Keep both doors shut. A full freezer holds its temperature for roughly two days if nobody opens it, half full for about a day, and the fridge side for around four hours. Move anything you cannot lose into a cooler with ice, and resist the urge to keep unplugging and replugging it, since short cycling like that is hard on the compressor. If there is water on the floor, pull the plug at the wall before you mop.

How long does a fridge repair usually take?

Most jobs are done inside an hour once the fault is confirmed. The exception is a freezer packed solid with ice, because that has to be thawed before anyone can reach the parts behind it, and there is no way to rush that safely. Give us the brand and model when you call and the parts that commonly fail on your machine ride out with the tech, which is what keeps this to one visit.

My fridge is twelve years old. Is it worth fixing?

It depends far more on which part failed than on the age. A relay, a fan or a blocked drain on a twelve year old fridge is money well spent, since the expensive parts of that machine are still fine. A compressor or a leak in the sealed system is a different conversation, and on a household unit that is usually where we tell you to put the money toward a new one instead. You get that opinion before you commit to anything.

Do you work on built-in units, wine coolers and chest freezers?

Yes to all three, along with side by side, bottom freezer and integrated units hidden behind cabinet panels. Built-ins take longer simply because getting the machine out of the cabinetry is half the job, so mention it when you book and we allow for the extra time rather than turning up short.

The ice maker and the water dispenser stopped. Same visit?

When both stop together it is usually one thing upstream, either the valve that feeds them or a frozen supply line, so it is one repair rather than two. Worth mentioning first though, that a dispenser running slowly is often just a filter nobody has changed in three years, and that is a five dollar fix you can do yourself before calling anyone.

Fridge calls we took in Welland, in their own words

Neighbours from Dain City to Chippawa Park who rang about a warm fridge. Swipe or use the arrows to read more.

Got home Friday to a fridge that was running away like normal but everything inside was room temperature. Someone was here by half seven that evening and it was sorted before the freezer had a chance to go. Saved me a whole shop.

He spent twenty minutes on it and then told me not to spend the money. Said what had gone on ours was the expensive end of the machine and I would be calling him again by Christmas. Left without charging me a cent. That is why I am writing this.

Water kept collecting under the vegetable drawers and I had been mopping it out every couple of days for months. Turned out to be a blocked drain and it took him about half an hour. I wish I had called in the spring.
Steph L.North Welland · last month
Ice maker had quit. Booked in the morning, done by early afternoon, price was what they said on the phone.
Ken A.Chippawa Park · 2 weeks ago
Ours had started making a whirring noise loud enough to hear from the living room, and the fridge side was going warm while the freezer stayed solid. He knew what it was before he had the panel off. Quiet ever since.
Hanna V.Welland South · a month ago
Ours is built into the cabinets and the last company that came out took one look and said they do not touch those. These lads brought two people, got it out without marking the units, and had it back in place the same afternoon.
